The Store is Open Again!

Hello! I have made the unprecedented move of re-opening my online store, just in time for you to fulfill any of your holiday materialism responsibilities, or possibly just to get yourself a treat.

I have screen prints from back when I still had regular access to screen printing. Lots of old rock posters, many for bands that may not even exist now. But the pictures on them still work fine, don’t be discouraged. Also art prints, including many that haven’t been for sale in a very long time, and when these are gone they will in all likelihood be quite gone forever.

Also I have original paintings back on offer, including a few new ones since the last time I was selling so have a look at those.

And I’ve got stickers available as well if you’ve got just a few bucks you’re looking to part with.

Of course, my Threadless and INPRNT shops continue to exist where they’ve always been.

You may recall I spent a fair amount of my personal time last year trying to figure out how oil paints work. I would like to let anyone who actually reads this know that I have not given up on this project. At one point I acquired an anatomical model of a human skull and I’ve been using it for reference…

As fun as it is to draw/paint skulls, capturing the subtleties in a completely white object is actually kind of tricky! I need a lot more practice here.

The last couple weeks I went back to doing #foodpaintchallenge paintings from Instagram if for no other reason than to use some different colors than the skull paintings…

Krampus Katchup

Oh hey hi. I forgot to post the Krampus Heads I painted last month for a show. These are on pre-cut Krampus-shaped panels, about a foot tall, and painted in acrylics. The blue one sold, but the other two are available if anyone is interested.

WarPigs' 4th Anniversary

I got to design a t-shirt for WarPigs’ 4th anniversary celebration. This is four of the mascots from different WP beers (including one that hasn’t been released yet…) as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. This despite the fact that none of them, arguably, are “men” and absolutely no one has a horse.

Keeping Secrets

I’ve been working on a lot of things I can’t show as yet, while developing a clever system of having a lot to do, while still having no money coming in. That part is really working well. Cool Cool.

I did, however, find time over the weekend to make this painting of an single piece of poppéd corn. It turns out one little corn is very complicated and this was a lot harder than I realized when I started on it, but I think I got it to a good enough place eventually. It’s all still just figuring out how this oil paint stuff works, or absolutely fails to.

Donut Give Up

Still doing that weekly #foodpaintchallenge on Instagram. It’s good painting practice and honestly I’m always better at doing assignments than having to both think of a thing to do and also do it. So this week was the above donuts, and I’m pretty happy with it overall. The pink frosting was much more intense in the photo reference, but I think it still works here. I will have to figure out how one mixes the colors to really sell that intensity in the future. Still, if you squint a bit, this definitely looks a bit like a couple of donuts.

I will say this isn’t entirely accurate to the piece. A new problem with oils I’ve discovered is they require somewhere from three days to ‘who knows’ to dry. So scanning a new piece is right out. And lighting a wet painting to photograph is a a real glare-fest no matter how you come at it.

The Oil Age

I had a very bad painting teacher (PATRICE!!) in art school. In addition to giving me a very undeserved C, she didn’t actually teach us much about painting as I recall. Just gave us assignments and set us loose with a medium the use of which I understood only just. And after a semester I didn’t know much more. The five-foot square self-portrait I was required to do for my final project is still in a closet at my parents’ place and some day is destined to be burned. So I broke up hard with oil paints, and also painting in general, around 1994.

Eventually I picked up watercolors on my own terms. I had never had a watercolor class (which were not even offered at my school) and absolutely no one could tell me I was doing it wrong and I could enjoy them as I saw fit. and that was all the painting I did for a long time. (Let me know if you want to see some of the weird stuff I was doing for nobody in the very early aughts.) Yet, even just a quick scroll through the posts on this brief records you will see that in the past year or so I picked up some major painting bug somewhere. I suppose we can blame the pandemic for it like everything else.

In September of 2020 I painted a bottle of Miller High Life in gouache, that led to a series of macrobrew can and bottle paintings. And altho I’d been doing some gouache work previous to that, that’s the thing that I think really set it off. Beer led inevitable to hot dogs. And feeling some limitation in gouache (likely more my lack of technique than anything) led to wanting something more opaque and layer-able than gouache ( which reactivates everytime you get it wet). And that’s how in April I ended up ordering a bunch of acrylic paints.

And that’s about where YouTube gets involved and radicalizes me. If you are looking for videos for acrylic painting they are definitely there, but you will find far, far more videos about oil painting. And then you will think about oil painting a lot based on the magical people doing things with it on the YT. And then your friend Melissa will get you interested in plein air painting (sorry for the fancy art talk, it’s literally just painting outside). And after you get a portable easel and have a go with acrylics you realize how fast they dry out in a breeze! Too fast! And you watch more videos to the point that you’re thinking well come on I can definitely do that. And then a box of oil paint shows up on your doorstep. YouTube, kids. Not even once.

And now we are in the present, (well, two days ago) when I opened up these new oil paints and made a small, quick oil sketch from a photo posted on the Sktchy app. Loose, without any preliminary drawing or actually much considering any particular approach and well it actually came out pretty good, for a first try in 25+(!!) years. Nothing earthshaking. The value range is real flat. Colors are not what I would hope, but hey first try. And I have all this paint so I have to talk up the small wins to keep myself at it.

Don’t worry, to make up for any hubris this little scrap of success might have spawned, two subsequent endeavors both went very south and you will never see them. But this is the price of a long withheld redemption.

Some further observations:

As I have not involved turpentine in any way, this all smells quite nice.
I still don’t know when this stuff every dries. I mean the one shown above is still wet wet. Not like sticky. I could scrape it off if I wanted. So that’s real different.
People doing oil painting demos on the Internet are all guilty of concealing far more than they reveal and I hate them.
There are more plans for painting outside a week from tomorrow. So we all have that to look forward to.

Hot Dog Paintings

In addition to beers, I’ve also been returning to painting Chicago style hot dogs of late. I can see some progress in the work, myself and I hope it’s apparent to others. The one on the left was done in acrylic, and the other two in gouache. All hot dogs were delivered by Slim’s Chicago.
